Empirical Study of Variable BO and so under different Performance Metrices in the IEEE 802.15.4

Abstract

IEEE 802.15.4 is a standard having rich capabilities of pervasive and ubiquitous computing for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs). IEEE 802.15.4 based beacon-enabled mode uses a super-frame structure for the data transmission. The super-frame structure comprises two MAC parameters: beacon order (BO) and super-frame order (SO). Beacon order defines the length of a beacon interval (BI), whereas super-frame order depicts the active portion. These MAC parameters play vital role in network throughput, network delay and energy depletion. In this paper, the performance of IEEE 802.15.4 standard under variable BO and SO in a star topology is analyzed. Simulation analysis based on NS-2, by taking large SO as compared to BO results in high quantity and less end-to-end delay but consumes high energy consumption. Whereas, by taking a large BO as compared to SO results in less energy consumption, higher latency, and less throughput.
